Every year, millions of people diagnosed with Cancer. What then follows is a roller coaster of emotions: anger, fear, indecision, misery and the dire need to reach out to a family member or a closed one for guidance and encouragement.
Type of Cancer: Lung Cancer
Known for hitting sixes, the sensational all rounder was diagnosed with a type of lung cancer called seminoma. He underwent a long treatment in US. At times, he would write detailed blogs about his chemo session, his suffering that would left his fan shattered, touched and praying. But the suffering didn’t shatter him and he successfully battled the disease. He said “I was always motivated while I was going through my treatment that I’m going to come back and play for India. I think that kept me going and got me through”.
Type of Cancer: Brain Tumor
Once Mark Rufalo had a dream that he had a brain tumor and when he decided to see a doctor, the dream came true. Fortunately the doctors removed the tumor successfully. Sharing the experience he told to a leading daily “The whole experience of getting close to mortality changed my perspective. I thought I deserved more, and I wasn’t grateful for all the great shit that had happened to me. After the brain tumor happened, I realized I love acting, I’ve always loved it, I may never get a chance to do it again”.
Type of Cancer: Ovarian Cancer
In 2012, the Nepali beauty who ruled Bollywood with her acting and infectious smile was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. But the news never shook the braveheart. She underwent treatment at a hospital in New York where she would keep her fans informed and updated about her encounter with chemo sessions. In an interview she said “I think cancer helps to transform a person, it affected me so much that it enabled me to grow, appreciate life and honor my body.”
Type of Cancer: Skin Cancer
Hugh Jackman discovered Basal Cell Carcinoma on his nose and then followed many procedures for skin cancer. Now, it’s his routine to get tested every three months. He said “I’m realistic about the future and it’s more than likely that I’ll have at least one more but probably many more, which is not uncommon for an Aussie, particularly from English stock, growing up in Australia where I don’t remember ever being told to put sunscreen on.”
Type of Cancer: Breast Cancer
In 2008, her doctor recommended that she receive an MRI. The result showed that she had breast cancer. She underwent double mastectomy and has since become a role model for early detection. She has also founded an organization that offers free MRIs for high-risk women. In an interview she said “When I was able to find my cancer in the stage I did, my passion for wanting to do something for these women was beyond what I could express.”
Type of Cancer: Testicular Cancer
Armstrong came to know that he had testicular cancer in October 1996. The doctor also said that it had already spread to his lungs, brain, and abdomen. He immediately began his chemotherapy sessions and in February 1997, the doctors declared him cancer-free. In an interview he said “To continue believing in yourself, believing in the doctors, believing in the treatment, believing in whatever I chose to believe in.”
Type of Cancer: Colon Cancer
In 2002, Sharon Osbourne learned that she had colon cancer which required the removal of one-foot section of her colon. Ten years later she discovered that she had a gene linked to breast cancer. She took a bold decision by undergoing double mastectomy.
Michael C. Hall
Type of Cancer: Hodgkin’s lymphoma
In 2010, Michael C. Hall revealed that he was battling cancer but he was almost done with the treatment and the disease was in remission. He became cancer free after a year. He got tremendous support from his fan for which he said “It’s an invitation to be grateful for what I have.”
