Pelvis is the lowest part of abdomen. Organs that are included in pelvis are bladder, bowel and uterus. Pelvic pain is a syndrome that affects many women and it occurs mostly in the lower part of the abdomen. This pain might be constant and sharp in a particular spot, or an intermittent pain that might come and go.  

Pelvic pain can be caused by varied varieties of problems like premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or more serious conditions like cervical cancer. But in cervical cancer, this pain is experienced in later stages.

What is Cervical Cancer?

Statistics say that more than 14 million cases of cervical cancer occur every year. Human papilloma virus (HPV) is the leading cause of this cancer which is transmitted during sexual intercourse.

Is Pelvic pain a common symptom of many conditions?

Pelvic pain can be common symptom of many conditions. Possible causes of pelvic pain include:

  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)-PMS can cause pain in the lower part of the abdomen, making it hard to know the cause of pain.
  • Constipation- It is a common cause of pelvic pain which is not always evident.
  • Kidney stones- When kidney stone move down the ureter( a tube by which urine passes from kidney to bladder) it causes pain in pelvis.
  • Urinary tract infections- Urinary tract infections can cause severe pelvic pain.

 

When does pelvic pain mean Cervical Cancer?

Like mentioned above, pelvic pain can also occur due to numerous other conditions and sometimes it is indistinguishable. The risk is more if you had multiple sexual partners, abnormal Pap smear or have a family history of cervical cancer.

When to see a doctor?

If you are a woman who regularly experiences pelvic pain, you should have it assessed by a doctor. Dull pain which occurs during menstruation is normal but severe pain should not be avoided.

If the cause of the pain is cervical cancer and if it’s diagnosed early then through regular screening and combination of various cervical cancer medicines it can be treated. But, even if the pain is not because of the chronic condition such as cancer, serious pelvic pain can have a huge impact on a woman’s life.
