WHAT IS TEMOZOLOMIDE?
Temozolomide interferes with the development of cancer cells, slowing their growth and spread in the body. Temozolomide is an anti-cancer ("antineoplastic" or "cytotoxic") chemotherapy drug. This medication is classified as an "alkylating agent."
Temozolomide is used for the treatment of anaplastic astrocytoma, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) (types of brain tumors). Temozolomide is classified as an alkylating agent. Alkylating agents are most active in the resting phase of the cell. These drugs are cell-cycle non-specific. Temozolomide is similar to the drug dacarbazine. It acts as a "pro-drug" meaning it needs to be transformed to its active (cancer fighting) form by the body's metabolism.
