Aprotinin is used in combination with human fibrinogen, human thrombin and calcium chloride to prevent bleeding of tissues or surfaces during various surgical procedures. It may also be used in conditions where blood fails to clot properly.
Fibrinogen is used for treating sudden and severe bleeding episodes in patients with clotting problems due to inborn fibrinogen (naturally occurring) deficiency.
Thrombin is used to prevent surgical blood loss as well as minor bleeding/oozing. It is mainly used when the bleeding cannot be controlled by usual surgical techniques like suturing or ligation.
